Previously, each class was divided into groups, and each worked on one aspect of a project , like the research, writing and presentation. The old methods was subject-based and done in isolation. The Storyline method, on the other hand, integrates what they have to cover with several activities, making it more enjoyable and fun. The best thing about storyline is that the children don't realize they're actually doing real work like comprehension because it's all built in. So they look forward to it and ask when the next topic is coming along when it ends.

With the boom in technology and new gadgets being released practically every week, it was inevitable that educational institutions would take a slice of the action and entice their students with technology to adopt that mix of traditional and digital interactive teaching and learning methods.

Several educational institutions have put across the digital test to their students allowing a sample of fresher’s to use the new iPhone and its applications as part of their learning at the institution. There are several things that students can engage in whilst using an iPhone as part of their busy life. Since most students will engage in part-time employment to support themselves financially through their student life, the idea seemed quite genius to allow lecturers to keep in contact with students who have such a busy life.

There are a couple of universities that have actually trialled the use of such technology and have found them to be a learning and motivational tool both for students and lectures. For example, the University of Central Lancashire in Preston developed and offered their students a free iPhone application that allowed students to be fully capable of exploring the university campus and local amenities. The application had various services stored on it such as university and campus maps as well as information on local entertainment centres, restaurants and transport links.

Also, when you get students coming from different parts of the world you find that you get stopped quite a lot for directions. This new application meant that students no longer had to stop lecturers or senior students for directions in and around the university campus.

Abilene Christian University based in Texas completed its first year of running a pilot program where they gave 1000 freshman students the opportunity to select an iPhone or iPod Touch phone and use it for free for the duration of the study. This was seemingly one innovative way of stopping students from being distracted by their mobile phones during lecturers and classroom learning sessions as it allowed the integration of the institutions curriculum into the application so that students could leverage the use of their gadgets as part of their education.

With the immense developments in technology and social media connectivity it was quite enjoyable and invigorating to see how such technology could revolutionise the learning experience using digital interactivity.

Many universities and colleges require a student to live on campus at least during their freshman year. This is very beneficial to students as they will learn about campus life and the many benefits that come with living on campus.

Living on campus allows one to meet and interact with a wide variety of people. People from all over the world will attend a quality college and university so you will be exposed to new cultures and learn so much from them. As well, you will make long lasting friends and have support during times when you may feel home sick. Living on campus helps ease any anxieties associated with the transition from home to college. Not only does living on campus give you easy and quick access to classes, but you will also be able to interact with people living in your dorm and take part in the social gatherings and parties.

Living on campus will give you the ability to take part in many clubs and organizations. This can include organizations that focus on education, cultural diversity, gender issues, recreational activities, spiritual activities, political clubs, sports activities, and much more. Colleges and Universities also have various extra curricular activities such as working at the college newspaper, radio station, and more. The convenience of living on campus makes it more likely that you will participate in clubs and other organizations. Atlas Shrugged—Judging

Essays will be judged on both style and content. Judges will look for writing that is clear, articulate and logically organized. Winning essays must demonstrate an outstanding grasp of the philosophic meaning of Atlas Shrugged.

Essay submissions are evaluated in a fair and unbiased four-round judging process. Judges are individually selected by the Ayn Rand Institute based on a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Ayn Rand’s works. To ensure the anonymity of our participants, essay cover sheets are removed after the first round. Winners’ names are unknown to judges until after essays have been ranked and the contest results finalized.

Atlas Shrugged—Rules

No application is required. Contest is open to students worldwide.
Entrant must be in 12th grade or college/university at the time of entry. Graduate students and part-time students are eligible.
Essay must be between 800 and 1,600 words.
Essay must be submitted by September 17, 2010, by 11:59 PM, PST.
Essay must be solely the work of the entrant. Plagiarized essays will be disqualified.
Entrants may submit only one essay. Decisions of the judges are final.

The Fountainhead—Rules

No application is required.

Entrant must be in the 11th or 12th grade.

Contest is open to students worldwide.

Essay must be no fewer than 800 and no more than 1,600 words in length and double-spaced. One entry per student, please.

Your thesis is the most critical aspect of your research essay. It not only organizes the material you are presenting, it also focuses your research efforts. Your information presented to the readers must be true and verifiable, and it doesn't need to be totally new to your readers. It could simply be a pertinent fact that explicitly illustrates the point you wish to make.

If you use a piece of startling information, follow it with a sentence or two of elaboration. In the sense, we can provide you with the most significant details that are mostly connected to the desired topic for your thesis or even dissertation. It is important to restate the thesis and supporting ideas in an original and powerful way as this is the last chance the writer has to convince the reader of the validity of the information presented.

Essays are used to learn more about your reasons for applying to the course, university or company and your ability to benefit from and contribute to it. Your thoughts expressed will let you state your case more fully than other sections of your document, and provide the evaluator with better insight about you and how you differ from the other applicants. In marginal cases, the essays are used to decide whether an applicant will be selected.

The purpose of the admissions essay is to convey a sense of your unique character to the admissions committee. The bell rings and there they all sit, with those little faces trying to decide which distraction in class will pull them away from the task at hand. Today's technologically advanced students have incredible focus when they put their minds to it, the problem is there is so much COMPETITION. What’s a teacher to do?

Let me offer the following suggestion. You need to do something totally unexpected at the beginning of your lesson to grab their attention to distract them, if you will, from all of the internal distractions they bring to your class each day. Then after you grab their attention, you promise that you will share something else at the end of the lesson if they stay on task. What you accomplish is gaining their focus and encouraging them to follow through. All in all a successful class session!

I suppose now you want me to share how? I will share one way I do it. I am an educational speaker from Minnesota and I share school assembly programs with thousands of kids each year. I use many techniques to capture focus, things like music, sound effects, simple puppetry, but primarily MAGIC!

Magic is intriguing to kids, they are naturally curious and if you start your lesson with a magic trick you incite curiosity. If you combine it with your educational message you will capture and maintain their focus. Then a promise of another mystery at the end of the lesson and they have something to look forward to.

Here is an example of what I am talking about...

I KNOW WHAT YOU’RE THINKING

Imagine this, you're sitting in class explaining that your lesson is to discuss one of 3 historical wars. As a bonus, the class gets to vote on which of three wars you will discuss. You show a manila envelope and display three pieces of poster board each with the name of a war: Korean, WWII, and Vietnam war. You announce that the selection will be made democratically and you poll the class to see which war will be discussed. Let's imagine after you poll your class, Korean war is selected. You turn to your class and say, “That is very strange, read the note that is in the envelope...”. Your students find a note and upon opening it, it says...most students find the KOREAN war the most interesting, so do I, I will plan on discussing the Korean war!

FRAME OF REFERENCE: The teacher can have the students choose between one of three topics and whichever they choose the teacher correctly predicts the results.

Think about this scenario for a moment, you knew which of three possible outcomes they would pick before they actually did. Do you think this would make a strong impression on your students? You bet it would! What makes this so effective is the simple method. In the magical world, this is known as a multiple out. What that means is, you are right no matter which war is chosen.

Needed: 3 pieces of poster board, an opaque envelope to put the three cards in, and your teacher's guide/notebook.

Have the wars Korean, VietNam, and WWII printed on the 3 poster board cards. On the back of the WWII card write: Most students find the WWII the most interesting, so do I, we shall discuss WWII! In the envelope that contains the cards have a note that states: Most students find the Korean war the most interesting, so do I, we shall discuss the Korean war! Finally, in your teacher guide/calendar insert a bright piece of paper that states: Most students find the Vietnam war the most interesting, so do I, we shall discuss the Gulf War!

Step-by-step instructions : From this point, it should be fairly obvious what happens. You put the cards on the table and have the students vote for their American Conflict. Then simply direct them to the appropriate source. Afterthoughts: Now in this example I used American wars but you could use countries, parts of the Constitution, famous paintings...whatever 3 subjects you deem are appropriate for your current lesson can be used.

Now there are other ways to reveal your prediction, one teacher I know recorded one response on her answering machine. She decided to replace the note in the teacher guide. If the students selected that particular subject, she pulled out her cell phone, and dialed her own # (don’t give the student your # for obvious reasons). She would then hand the phone to the student to listen to the answering machine which would say the prediction. Technical Notes: Use your creative juices and you may be able to come up with other “outs” like the answering machine. If you use my 3 suggestions and the answering machine, you could have 4 subjects for the kids to choose from instead of 3.

So there you have it, a great way to kick-off a history lesson! Now how can you use this tool to relate to your next lesson plan? We often tell kids that they need to be more creative, it doesn’t hurt for us to exercise our creative muscles as well.

The University of Tsukuba invites applications from international students for the 2010 University of Tsukuba “Tsukuba Scholarship” as per the guidelines outlined below. The University of Tsukuba’s “English Course Program”, which will commence in the 2010 academic year, is newly established program through which international students studying at the University of Tsukuba at the undergraduate level can earn their academic degrees by taking classes only in English.

1. Purpose

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support for exceptional international students who are applying to enter the University of Tsukuba’s English Course Program at the undergraduate level, thereby contributing to the cultivation of people who can make future contributions to international society.

2. Application Qualifications and Conditions

Applicants for this scholarship must fulfill the following conditions:

Nationality: Applicants whose nationality is of a country other than Japan (limited to those countries with which Japan has diplomatic relations).
Applicants who fulfill the qualifications for entering the English Course Program in any of the following undergraduate schools:
(reference) Courses to be established in 2010
- Undergraduate Program of International Social Studies, School of Social and International Studies

What is an IQ?

An Intelligence Quotient indicates a person's mental abilities relative to others of approximately the same age. Everyone has hundreds of specific mental abilities--some can be measured accurately and are reliable predictors of academic and financial success.

The term "intelligence" is often used for person with hugh general knowledge. It's inconsistent. Try this: runs the windows calculator, Select View | Standard and type 1+2*3=. You should get 9 as the answer. Now change to View | Scientific, and type again 1+2*3=. This time you get 7.
No unit conversions. Does your current calculator know how many feet are 100 meters? How many Fahrenheit is 32 Celsius?

How to choose educational software for your school

Teachers go crazy for educational software. I’ve witnessed this first hand. As I sell educational software for EvaluNet, this obviously encourages me.

The crux of the matter however, is that there are too many schools out there who have too many educational software products that they just don’t use – either because they don’t have time, or because they don’t know how, or because the software is no longer relevant. There are many different types of educational software products that fit into completely different categories, namely:

Revision and consolidation
Curriculum delivery
Skill development
Assessment and testing

So how do you go about selecting software that brings value to your school? The first and most important step is to identify the needs of the school and the goals and limitations of your computer centre. As a teacher, the most important questions you should ask yourself are:

* What are the needs of our learners and teachers?

For learners, needs could include:

- improving literacy and numeracy skills
- improving learning and concentration ability
- improving spatial skills
- improving knowledge and understanding of the curriculum

For teachers, needs could include:
- decreasing the time spent on marking
- increasing the quality of lessons
- streamlining the teaching/learning process
- engaging learners on an interactive level
- diagnosing problem areas
- assisting with behind-the-scenes planning and admin

* How many computers do we have available?

This will help you select suitable software based on your average class sizes and the number of computers you have in your computer room.

* What is my budget?

Knowing this upfront will save you a lot of time in determining what you can and can’t afford. There is no point in spending time evaluating a product that costs tens of thousands of rands when you only have a few thousand available.

And to a lesser extent:

* What types of software have our learners and teachers already enjoyed? (e.g. activity based, adventure based etc.)

Asking yourself these important questions and acquainting yourself with the true needs of your school (both learners and teachers) will go a long way in ensuring that you buy educational software that becomes an investment. When evaluating the suitability of educational software based on your school’s needs, think about the following:

Does this product fill an educational need? Can you name the need?
How do you intend using (implementing) the product?
How many teachers are going to use it?
Do the teachers possess the necessary competencies to use the product?
How much training is required, and how will the teachers be trained to use the product? Do they have time to be trained? Are they willing?
Is it a product or a service that you are buying?

These questions are taken directly from Kobus van Wyk’s post “Does a software package add volume or value?“. The Teacher’s Monthly did a follow-up survey based on this post to enquire whether or not teachers and principals feel that the educational software they are using is adding value to their school. The results can be viewed in our article “Survey shows computers come second best“.

Another important factor to consider (especially in the South African school environment) is:

* How much time does a learner need to spend using the product in order to benefit and see positive results?

The unfortunate reality is that large class sizes, and limited computer resources means that at most schools learners are only exposed to a computer for about 30 minutes (40 at best!) per week. The principle is simple: if you want a child to be a good reader, he needs to spend time reading. If you want a child to grasp a specific concept in Mapwork (Social Science), he needs to spend time practicing that concept.

So, where does “computer time” fit into your school’s timetable? How big a need is ICT integration at your school? What value do you place on computers and educational software?

For me, educational software that is good, is educational software that fulfills the needs of your learners and teachers, and the goals set forth for your school computer centre.

Teaching Students About Failure And Success

While many teachers are understandably focused on teaching their respective subjects to the best of their abilities, many do so with an eye on the overall success that a student may achieve in their academic endeavors and their lives. Helping students develop the right habits and a proper mindset to achieve success is a strenuous and difficult undertaking, but teachers are often undaunted in this challenge.

But what about teaching students to deal with failure?

Many students are devastated by failure. Whether it's failing on a test, failing a course, failure to reach some academic goal, or failure to land a sought after internship or job, their tendency is to personalize and internalize the failure.

Unfortunately, many students have a mindset that is not conducive to circumventing failure because of, what I call, the "ego boost syndrome" that's associated with getting good grades.

These are the students who are more focused on getting an "A" than on learning. To receive a "good" grade results in a sharp rise or reinforcement of self-esteem. What is actually learned is secondary.

There is a correlation between getting good grades and not making mistakes. The fewer mistakes one makes on a test, the better the grade. The fewer the mistakes that one makes in life or in one's career, the greater the success, right?

Because we live in a society that encourages perfection and discourages imperfection, many students have a learned fear of making mistakes and will go to great lengths to avoid them. We teachers see this when we bring up questions for discussion. Often it's the not the smartest student who jumps at the chance to provide the right answer; it's the student who is least afraid of giving the wrong answer who responds.

Right or wrong, we appreciate the effort of the student who risks public failure to make a contribution. That's the same unbridled effort that allows for people to learn from their mistakes. It's responsible for breakthroughs and drives innovation. It's also an attitude that's rarely displayed in talented people who are protective of their egos. Motivational psychologist, Carol Dweck, has this to say about making mistakes:

"People who believe in the power of talent tend not to fulfill their potential because they're so concerned with looking smart and not making mistakes. But people who believe that talent can be developed are the ones who really push, stretch, confront their own mistakes and learn from them."

In her book, Mindset, she writes that people with a growth mind-set tend to demonstrate the kind of perseverance and resilience required to convert life's setbacks into future successes. That ability to learn from experience was cited as the No. 1 ingredient for creative achievement in a poll of 143 creativity researchers cited in Handbook of Creativity in 1999.

Because the objective of education is learning - not grades - the effectiveness of any teacher lies within the willingness of the student to learn what is being taught. One of the most valuable lessons that teachers provide students is how to analyze mistakes and learn from failure.

I teach my students that the only failure there is, is failure to meet the requirements of success. Each failure - when we acknowledge them as a shortcoming or setback - provides invaluable lessons that clue us in to where we need to place more attention or greater effort.

When my students talk to me about career choices that they are contemplating and the skills and abilities they need to succeed, I tell them that accountability is the most important ability you can use to seduce an employer.

Accountability is an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one's actions.

Unlike success, no one intentionally seeks failure, but to separate one's self from one's failure, and embrace the knowledge provided by it has to be an intentional act. If failure results from mistakes being made, they clearly need to be analyzed and corrected to prevent being repeated. The action of exploring the causes of failure and addressing them - whether yours or an organization to which you belong - is what creates success.

When students are taught these principles, they will be able to use failure as a building block to success.

This is our flagship program. Scholarship is offered annually to for an Indonesian to attend the Edward S. Mason Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, USA.

In many cases, you are ready to consider a homeschool program for high school, but convincing your parents that they can do it can be a daunting task.

How to use and show all keyboard shortcuts in Word 2007

There is a great little trick that I actually discovered by accident. If you press the ALT key when you have a word document open, the shortcut keys appear over the button they apply to. Just try it for yourself. You will see that Alt-F = Office Button, Alt-1 = Save, Alt-2 = Undo, Alt-3 = Redo, Alt-H = Home tab, Alt-N = Insert tab, Alt-P = Page Layout tab, Alt-S = References tab, Alt-M = Mailings tab, Alt-R =Review tab, Alt-V =View tab, Alt-L = Developer tab, and Alt-B = Acrobat tab. You might have different tabs enabled on your Word 2007 however what ever tabs you do have, they will show the keyboard shortcut for it. Below is a screen-shot of what you will see.

How to see the keyboard shortcuts for the individual tabs?

When you have a tab open, there are more keyboard shortcuts to see if you have used the ALT key to open the tab. For example if you go to the Insert tab by pressing ALT-N only then will you be able to see the extra shortcuts available.

If you click on the Insert tab with your mouse you will not be able to see these individual tab shortcuts. See the screen-shot below. To get to this stage this is what I pressed.

I pressed the ALT key only to see what the shortcuts are and to start the process. See above screen-shot for the first step.
Then I pressed N only to get to the insert tab.
Now I can see all the shortcuts for the Insert tab. Now if I press a letter listed below it will be like pushing that button.

How to insert a picture into a word document using keyboard shortcuts?

To insert a picture into your word 2007 document simply press these keys on your keyboard in order.
1. ALT key
2. N key
3. P key

Now you will have a dialog box open to browse for the picture to insert to the document. To change to another tab to use its shortcuts simply press ALT. The ALT gets turned on and off.

How to add a border to your page using keyboard shortcuts?

To add a border into your word 2007 document simply press these keys on your keyboard in order.
1. ALT key
2. P key
3. Then quickly press the P and then B key.

Then the page border properties will open and you can choose if you want a shadowed border, thin or thick border, or anything to do with borders.

Notes on using keyboard shortcuts in Microsoft word 2007:

You can experiment on an unimportant document.
Just remember that to change to a different tab you need to press ALT, then Press ALT again to restart and choose another tab.
You will find your own favorite keyboard shortcuts in Word 2007 that will make your life so much easier.
